POLYTECHNIC HISTORY
Masvingo Polytechnic was established by the Manpower Planning and Development Act 1984 (No. 36), and amended in 1994 Chapter (28:02), in 1987 by renting 2 buildings in the high density suburb of Mucheke offering National Diploma courses in Secretarial and Accounting.
In 1988, the Polytechnic moved to its present site, adjacent to the provincial capital, Masvingo City, and 25km from the historic Great Zimbabwe ruins. In 1992, Engineering Departments such as Electrical, Mechanical and Automotive were opened. In 1993, disciplines such as Art and Design, Clothing, Hairdressing and Chemical were introduced. Meanwhile the Division of Commerce went on to offer Higher National Diploma in Accountancy and Marketing and also introduced Computer Studies, Storekeeping leading to the offering of Higher National Diploma in Secretarial Studies in 1999. Since then, the Polytechnic expanded to offer a variety of courses such as Food Science, Motor Vehicle Body Repair, Computer Systems, Instrumentation, Civil and Construction, Horticulture, Purchasing and Supply, Human Resources Management, Records Management and Bachelor of Technology in Food Science. In 2015, Animal Production was introduced in the Horticulture department. Currently the College has three Academic Divisions (Applied Sciences, Commerce and Engineering), with18 functional departments.
The Polytechnic, since its inception, through Education 3.0 (Teaching, Community Service and Research) has been producing skilled trainees for Industry and Commerce.
The introduction of the Heritage Based Education 5.0 Philosophy, with the two additional pillars (Innovation and Industrialization) coupled by the fact that the Polytechnic is operating in a rapidly changing environment, with the fourth industrial revolution upon us, there is a changing range of knowledge, skills and competences required to respond to evolving technology, digital and pandemic disruptions, aimed at producing goods and services.
